    Prof. Conor McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Limerick and the Centre Director for the new SFI Confirm – Smart Manufacturing research centre (www.confirm.ie), with 8 academic Institutions and 42 industrial partners.  Prof. McCarthy’s main area of research is in joining lightweight materials, mostly for high performance structural applications, where he has published over 120 papers and four book chapters. He currently leads a large research group looking at novel joining methods (see www.falcom.ie). Prof. McCarthy is a Science Foundation Ireland Principle Investigator and leads major research programmes in Engineering Science. His interests include bolted, bonded and thermally joined composites, multi-scale damage mechanics and non-linear finite element analysis.

     

    Title: Confirm – Smart manufacturing

     

    Synopsis: Professor Conor McCarthy is Centre Director for Confirm – Smart manufacturing, a new SFI Research centre with a mission to fundamentally transform Ireland to become world leading in Smart Manufacturing. Confirm will carry out fundamental research in Virtual Industrialisation, Cyber-physical Manufacturing Systems and Self-aware Manufacturing Systems, and this research will feed higher TRL research projects carried out with our Industry partners on Smart Products, Smart Machines, Smart Production Systems and Smart Supply chains. All research findings will be demonstrated through test-beds and prototype lines located at our multiple-partner sites. Conor will share this vision through a presentation and discussion on how Irish Industry can get involved in Confirm – Smart Manufacturing.
